The Autry Nature Education Facility Project
Perera Construction has just been awarded the renovation project for The Autry.
The project is a major renovation and reinstallation of first-floor galleries and outdoor areas into interactive exhibitions and public spaces housed within the existing museum footprint. The renovation will highlight the history and culture of Native peoples and include two dedicated California Indian galleries and an indigenous teaching garden with bioregions and interpretive centers. The new spaces are designed to educate students and visitors alike.
The multiyear project will be devoted to the Indigenous peoples of California, their relationship to the natural environment, and key resource stewardship practices they have employed in sustaining their traditions and lifeways. Through the Native California galleries and garden, visitors to the Autry will learn about historical and contemporary ecological issues that impact and, in some cases, threaten the way we live. Visitors will also learn how Native communities developed systems and techniques dedicated to maintaining bothplant and animal species on which their cultures often depend.
“The new galleries will teach our visitors how our Native vision has historically integrated Indigenous values, lifeways, and the natural environment, and will showcase our outstanding collection within these contexts,” said Marshall McKay, Autry Board Chairman and Chairman of the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation.
The first gallery will house the long-term exhibition First Californians, where visitors will come to understand how nature is weaved into the lifeways and ceremonial traditions of California Indians. It willlook at Native communities and cultures through both thematic and regional perspectives and showcase an important portion of the Southwest Museum of the American Indian Collection.
Environmental education continues in the California Native Teaching Garden,where an existing outdoor area will be converted to showcase the various bioregions and flora depicted in First Californians. A water component will replicate the journey of a river from its mountain source to a pool that depicts riparian ecosystems in lower woodlands and coastal marshes. Along the way, visitors will encounter plants native to coniferous forests, mountain meadows, valley grasslands, and alluvial fans, as well as woodlands and marshes—all habitats in which Native cultures traditionally live.
The third major feature of this project is a gallery that will house Dreamers, Doctors, Basketweavers. This gallery rounds out the representation of Native California by focusing on the foothills and coastal woodlands in the state’s central region. Organized around the Autry’s extensive California Indian collections, part of the Southwest Museum of the American Indian Collection, the exhibitionlooks at Indian culture through the lives of two important twentieth-century Pomo women, Mabel McKay and Essie Parish, both of whom were “doctors” working in traditional methods. McKay was also a renowned basketweaver, and both were key community leaders who helped sustain the lifeways and traditions among the Pomo and other Native California peoples.
Richard M. Nixon Library Wing Addition & Auditorium Remodel
Multi-phased project consisted of ground-up construction, remodeling of existing facilities, extensive landscaping, temperature/humidity control, high tech security, and new FBI offices. UV sensitive lighting was installed throughout the underground storage facility to house the recently released Presidential documents consisting of 46 million pages of original presidential papers, and 11 hours of recordings. Upon completion, documents were transported from a Federal Facility (NARA) to the Nixon Library. The Project also included refurbishing and expanding of National Archives & Records Administration. Funding for the construction was provided by the Nixon Library Foundation and National Archives.
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Atrium Wet Lab Conversion
This project remodeled an existing 2,000 sq. ft. space to accommodate a new prostate cancer research facility including architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing modifications and upgrades. Architectural upgrades include an addition of a new wet lab space and tissue culture room complete with new lab benches, bio safety cabinets, Co2 incubators and a -80 freezer enclosure. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades include a new package AC unit, a duct furnace, multiple exhaust fans, an emergency power transfer system and new chemical resistant sinks including chemical neutralization tanks, de-ionized water supply and temperature controlled eye wash.
Claremont McKenna College Biszantz Family Tennis Facility
This ground-up project consisted of community center and 12 state-of-the-art training and competition class tennis courts. Centrally located to the courts is an observation tower (crow’s nest) with electronic scoreboard. A practice soccer field, restroom building, and a clubhouse complex with showers, lockers, player’s lounge, kitchen, and staff offices.
County of Los Angeles Castaic Pool & Sports Complex
The project consisted of the development of a new pool facility at the Castaic Sports Complex, including, construction of an approximately 8,000 sq. ft. pool building with restrooms, changing rooms, bag room, staff offices, storage and utility rooms, a 25 meter by 25 yard outdoor recreational swimming pool, a 25 yard by 21 foot shallow swimming pool combined with an approximately 2,000 sq. ft. splash pad. Associated site improvements include parking, walkways, fencing, landscaping, grading, and underground utilities. In addition, the project will include off-site road improvements, including asphalt pavement, curb, sidewalk, and lighting along Castaic Road.
California State University San Bernardino Student Recreation Center
Project consisted of the new construction of 2-story recreation center on the California State University San Bernardino campus. Project includes elevators, a state of the art kitchen, retail area, restrooms, game rooms, roller skating rink, basketball courts, exercise room, dance studio, men’s and women’s locker rooms, and jacuzzi with three story height rock-climbing wall and office suites. Significant site work and landscaping were also part of project. Building architecture has interior exposed steel and wood structure frame. 38,272 sq. ft.
SCE CTAC Showroom Remodel
Project consisted of the complete renovation of existing building, including, HVAC, electrical, and mechanical upgrades.
San Antonio Community Hospital Radiology Interventional Room Remodel
This project consisted of remodeling of an existing X-ray room/area to create an expanded procedure/X-ray room with control room, patient holding room, equipment room, and work areas. Additionally, there is a remodeling of the staff lounge and restrooms. The entire work area is approximately 1,500 sq. ft. The scope of work includes the abatement of floor tiles and lead-lined drywall, demolition of wall partitions, ceilings, doors and frames, millwork, and concrete slabs. There are underground utilities to include plumbing and electrical for the relocation of sinks, toilets, and the X-ray equipment. The new X-ray room consists of 4 lbs. per sf lead-lined drywall, Phillips equipment and lead-lined doors, frames, hardware, and windows. There is a structural steel and unistrut frame anchored to the existing concrete wall and beam to support the new Phillips equipment (table). The air conditioning for this room is fed from a dedicated 6.5 ton rooftop unit. The rest of the areas are fed from existing ductwork and AC units. The medical gas to include oxygen, air and vacuum are extended and tapped from existing system. This room will receive a separate medical gas zone valve. There are four new electrical panels to service all electrical distribution, air handler and lighting as well as the DDC control system for the air handler and mixing boxes. Additionally, the fire alarm system, nurse call system, and fire sprinkler system will be modified for the entire area. For the X-ray control room and work areas, there will also be new millwork such as base cabinets, countertops and full height wall cabinets.
SCE Dexus Photovoltaic Panel Installation
Dexus is one of, if not the largest, single-roof mounted solar installations in the world. Perera Construction installed 33,280 Sunpower modules equating to 10.15 MW AC power output as well as all of the supporting equipment necessary to interconnect the installation to Southern California Edison’s power grid.
Work included installing Sunpower modules, wiring to combiner boxes, wiring (over 75 miles) of DC power to inverters at various enclosure locations, and wiring 12 KV AC power to switchgear and transformer for distribution back to SCE’s power grid. Roof square footage was 1,686,590 sq. ft. (which equates to 38.7 acres). This area would facilitate the installation of 29.3 football fields, including the end zones. Work also involved constructing three equipment enclosures to house all the various electrical components. Masonry enclosure was plastered with reveals to match existing building. EIFS conduit chase were also constructed.
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Steven Spielberg Human Physiology Lab Remodel
Project consisted of a 6,500 sq. ft. OSHPD regulated tenant improvement on the second floor of the Steven Spielberg Building located on the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Campus in Los Angeles. The project was constructed while labs, exam rooms and offices were in full operation below. The project scope included; infectious control, off hours work, demolition, installing plumbing over sensitive lab space, upgrading electrical system to code, nurse call code blue and emergency pull cords, decorative 3 Form partitions, structural steel upgrades, drywall, millwork, MEP, security card readers, fire sprinkler, fire alarm, flooring and painting. Additionally Perera prepared the space for state licensing and providing all the required testing and reports for the licensing inspection process.
Desert Aurora Medical Center
Project consisted of the construction of 2-story medical office building including surgical services. The masonry building with structural steel decking at second floor included elevator, med-gas, nurse call systems, fire alarm, and sprinkler systems. Also included an auxiliary backup generator. Site work was approximately 60,000 sq. ft.
Hi-Desert Medical Center Birth Center Addition & ED Remodel
This OSHPD project consisted of a ground-up birth center addition and remodel of emergency department. The birth center addition included 2 operating rooms, 2 labor rooms and 5 delivery rooms. 7,800 sq. ft. remodel work included new masonry block, retaining walls, a glu lam supported roof system with metal stud framing for interior walls, and the installation of complex security monitoring systems with nurse call. Entry and site work were also included in this project.
IBHS Out-Patient Medical Clinic
Project consisted of 15,000 sq. ft., ground-up medical center consisting of 16 medical examination rooms, nurse stations, and pharmaceutical dispensary. Project is for a non-profit organization that offers health services to low-income / uninsured individuals.
Olive View/UCLA Medical Center Seismic Retrofit
Project consisted of 253,000 sq. ft. of seismic retrofit NPC work. The OSHPD approved project included was over 22 phases of construction spread amongst 7 floors. All mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment was seismically refitted to the building including all fixed hospital equipment. Equipment included X-ray machines, CT scanners cabinets, pharmacy, and rentable hospital rooms. The project was delivered 2 months ahead of schedule with a total savings back to the owner of over $1.2 million dollars.
Conejo Valley Clinic Remodel
Project consisted of interior improvements for an existing 40,905 sq. ft. exterior building shell for a full service Health Care facility. To accomplish this, the existing interior of the building was demolished and new walls and appurtenances were constructed in accordance with the attached plans and specifications. Improvements include wall partitions, HVAC components, lighting, data and communications for offices, exam rooms, and group rooms. The exterior shell remained intact with very minor alterations.
Citrus Community College Mathematics / Science Building
Project consisted of the new construction of 33,058 sq. ft., two story building to house classrooms and staff offices. Project included elevators and an adjacent, complimentary, single story building. Some trades include demolition, utilities, grading, paving, landscape and site improvements.
Claremont McKenna College Office of Development
Project consisted of the ground-up construction of a 19,000 sq. ft., 2-story administration building with an elevator. Includes street improvements, site work, and parking.
Harvey Mudd College Olin Lab Renovation
The 3,000 sqf Harvey Mudd College Olin Laboratory remodel project consisted of extensive structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing and architectural improvements. Structural upgrades included the retrofitting of the building’s roof for new generator and HVAC equipment. The mechanical scope consisted of reconfigured ductwork, new exhaust fans, a packaged air conditioning system for computer server room, and laboratory phoenix exhaust system for chemical fume hoods and snorkel arms. Electrical improvements included the addition of a new 45KW and 100KW natural gas emergency backup generators and ATS systems to safeguard long-running critical laboratory experiments. Plumbing upgrades included the addition of deionized and industrial water, acid waste and vent piping, as well as emergency showers and eyewash stations. Architectural improvements included new laboratory chemical resistant resin countertops and sinks, shelving with integrated electrical, natural gas turret systems. Added laboratory equipment included Kewanee fume hoods with custom water, gas, and phoenix valve control and alarm systems. Construction for this project was completed on time and is currently under punchlist and closeout.
Harvey Mudd College Parsons Renovation
Project consisted of the interior renovation of three floors of the Parsons Engineering building. Scope included modernizing 25,000 sq. ft. of faculty office, classroom and laboratory space into new clinic design space, laboratories, conference rooms, hallways, department office, break rooms, and gallery. The work also included extensive demolition to accommodate the new open floor plans, upgrade and expansion of HVAC, electrical, plumbing systems and installation of new finishes. The project was successfully completed ahead of the allotted 12-week summer break schedule.
Pitzer College Gold Student Health & Wellness Center
Remodel of the 13,500 sq. ft. 2-story Gold Health and Wellness Center includes the extensive interior and exterior renovation while bringing the facility to 2010 code requirements. This includes an overhaul of electrical, mechanical, plumbing and roofing systems. Structural upgrades include the erection of a 2ndfloor deck above fitness room to add a studio for Yoga and Pilates, new front entry canopy and pool side trellis. The renovation of the front façade includes new exterior windows and plaster for more natural light into the facility and a new lobby storefront and entry canopy. The remodel of the kitchen and dining room will add state of the art food service equipment including a pizza oven, grills, service counters, hoods, exhaust and ansul fire suppression system. Restroom, shower and locker facilities are part of the renovation. The existing pool area will be refurbished with new pool finishes, light fixtures, pumps and filters. This project is on schedule to complete by the end of May 2014.
Pitzer College Scott Hall Renovation
Project consisted of extensive demolition, renovation and structural upgrade of existing 23,000 sq. ft. administration and classroom building.
Child Development Center
Project consisted of 1-story, ground-up construction, offsite/onsite improvements, and recreation yard. Project included a large, outdoor play ground, administrative office for staff, conference room, and multi-purpose class rooms. The project was unique because construction occurred adjacent to school and during an active school year. 12,500 sq. ft.
HACSB Vista Del Sol Senior Housing Complex
Project consists of ground-up clubhouse, office facility, and multiple pods of buildings consisting of two and three bedroom units. Ground-up construction totaling over 51,000 sq. ft. of living space. Project also included extensive landscape construction.
Casa Blanca Resource Center
Project consisted of ground-up construction of public resource center for the City of Riverside. The facility is 16,000 sq. ft. and features post modern architecture.
Arlington Library Addition & Historical Renovation
Project consisted of new ground-up addition to existing 100 year old URM Carnegie Library and Historical Fire House Building. Historical restoration included retaining of historic features and seismic upgrades with modern ADA compliant interior. New addition consisted of masonry, steel and wood frame construction and included custom brick and plaster exterior with custom landscape and brick paver hardscape. Interior features included vaulted and custom wood ceiling and clerestory windows. Also included custom CCTU, CATU and computer systems. Custom granite and hardwood millwork.
Rosetta Canyon Fire Station & Community Park
Project consisted of ground-up fire station & community park. Fire station included 3-bay area totaling 12,000 sq. ft. and, 8,000 sq. ft. of offices. Also included 1 storage building. Park consisted of tot lot area with playground equipment with canopy shade cover, little league baseball field, two tennis courts, and two basketball courts. Exterior buildings include a restroom building complete with equipment rental room. Project also included new dog park with two separate areas for large and small dogs.
City of Santee Aquatics Center & YMCA
Ground-up YMCA complex includes an aquatic facility with two Olympic pools, bath house, food facilities, gymnastic center and administrative office with large and small multipurpose classroom. Work included, site work, utilities, parking, and street improvements. 40,000 sq. ft.
Rialto Senior Center
Project consisted of new construction of 18,000 sq. ft. Senior Center, including commercial grade kitchen, two catering cafeterias, multi purpose room, conference rooms, hair salon, and a bank. Parking and major site work was also included.
Hillcrest Aquatics Vapor Emissions Repair
This project consisted of the complete removal of the Natatorium roof along with abatement, re-framing, re-plastering, and painting of the interior underside of the new roof that was installed. Additionally covered in this cost was the installation of new fire sprinkler branch lines, start up the Desert Air System, cut-in new eaves along the exterior of the structure, and miscellaneous painting.
Pacific Palms Hotel Restautant & Salon Remodel
This project remodeled existing space to accommodate a restaurant and salon. Architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades were conducted to create a luxurious, new spa and salon. Architectural upgrades include an addition of a new jacuzzi, cascading water feature, and antique sculptures emanating style with a natural palette of color contrasting the clean essence of the spa. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades in the restaurant include a new package AC unit, a duct furnace, multiple exhaust fans, an emergency power transfer system and interior design modifications.
SCE Menifee Substation Office
Project consisted of 25,000 sq. ft. ground-up metal building, to house offices, break room, cubicle space, storage/filing room, and parking lot. Project is certified LEED Silver. Also included Sewer pump station, off site sewer and water, decorative color concrete, metal shade canopies. All metal was grounded to copper grounding grid.
SCE RDC 2,4, & 5 Photovoltaic Panel Installations
Projects consisted of the installation of rooftop mounted solar panels and equipment as well as interconnecting them into SCE electrical grid. Work included installing Sunpower modules, wiring to combiner boxes, wiring of DC power to inverters at various enclosure locations, and wiring 12 KV AC power to switch gear and transformer for distribution back to SCE’s power grid. Work also involved constructing multiple equipment enclosures to house all the various components. Masonry enclosure was plastered with reveals to match existing building. EIFS conduit chase were also constructed.
The RDC 2 project consisted of (5,928) 2 MW panels, the RDC 4 project consisted of (15,680) of 5 MW panels, and the RDC 5 project consisted of (15,900) of 5 MW panels.
SCE Whirlwind Substation
Project consisted of new construction with heavy mechanical and electrical system with associated site work and parking. Off-site & on-site Sewer pump station, off site sewer and water. All metal was grounded to copper grounding grid, electrical grid reconditioning, capable of redirecting energy to other substations in the event of a power failure.
SDG&E Centinela Substation Control Building
Project consisted of new substation control building with 230 kV switchyard.
Sunpower Sweetwater Project
The SunPower Sweetwater project consisted of the installation of 2MW photovoltaic panels at seven different public schools within the Sweetwater School District. Perera Construction managed the construction of ground-mount, fixed-tilt PV systems, multiple carports and shade-structures, and rooftop mounted solar systems. These projects were completed within two-months of receiving DSA permits.
Sunpower Ontario Convention Center Photovoltaic Panel Installation
Project consisted of the installation of 700 Kilowatts peak Sunpower® Solar Electric (Photovoltaic) System consisting of 2,100 solar modules and associated electrical equipment.
